Feeding Louisiana Receives $6 Million to Meet Immediate Needs of Member Food Banks

Food banks and pantries across the State of Louisiana are facing a significant challenge in meeting the growing demand for food assistance.

Soaring food prices and a decline in retail donations have resulted in thinly stocked shelves, making it increasingly difficult to feed the hungry, particularly during this time of year.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Feeding Louisiana, a leading organization dedicated to addressing hunger in the state, has received a substantial boost with a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $6 million.

This grant, provided by the State of Louisiana Office of Community Development, will assist food banks in replenishing their supplies and meeting immediate needs. However, it falls short of fully addressing the total requirements of the food banks.

Commenting on the grant, Pat R. Van Burkleo, executive director of Feeding Louisiana, expressed gratitude for the funds, stating, "While these dollars are appreciated and much needed, they do not fully meet the pressing needs of our food banks. We continue to work tirelessly to secure additional resources to ensure that no one in our communities goes hungry."

One of the primary reasons for the current challenge is the significant decrease in food donations. Grocery stores, which have become more efficient in handling online orders during the pandemic, have fewer surplus items to contribute to food banks.

Moreover, disruptions in the supply chain have resulted in delayed deliveries, causing a prolonged turnover cycle. Items that were once delivered within a few weeks are now taking months to arrive.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program plays a vital role in supporting community development activities aimed at building stronger and more resilient communities.

Administered through the State of Louisiana Office of Community Development, these federal funds have been instrumental in addressing various pressing needs across the state.

Feeding Louisiana urges individuals, businesses, and community organizations to come forward and support their local food banks and pantries.

Donations of non-perishable food items, funds, and volunteer assistance are all crucial in combating hunger and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the sustenance they desperately need.
