2026 LEGISLATIVE SESSION DELIVERS IMPORTANT WINS
FOR LOUISIANA’S FOOD BANKS & NEIGHBORS
The 2026 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature was an important and successful session for Feeding Louisiana, our five regional food banks, Louisiana farmers and producers, and the neighbors we serve across the state.
A major success was the inclusion of $3 million in HB 1 and $1.6 million in HB 312 for Feeding Louisiana. These funds will support the purchase of Louisiana-grown produce and protein from Louisiana farmers and producers for distribution through the state’s five regional food banks. This investment does more than help stock food bank shelves. It strengthens Louisiana’s food system by connecting local agriculture with families facing hunger.
At a time when food insecurity remains a serious challenge for too many Louisiana families, state leaders recognized the essential role food banks play in strengthening communities, supporting local agriculture, and ensuring access to nutritious food. Feeding Louisiana is grateful for the support shown by legislators, state leaders, food bank partners, volunteers, advocates, and community members throughout the session.
These outcomes did not happen by accident. They were the result of strong advocacy, clear communication, and coordinated work across the Feeding Louisiana network. Food bank leaders, board members, staff, volunteers, farmers, community partners, and neighbors helped tell the story of why food matters throughout the session and at Day at the Capitol — not only as emergency assistance, but as a foundation for health, stability, and opportunity.
The success of the 2026 session also reflects a broader understanding: food banks are not only responding to hunger after it happens. They are part of the infrastructure Louisiana needs to improve health, support families, respond to disasters, strengthen local economies, and make sure nutritious food reaches communities in every parish.
