Feeding Louisiana Commends Passage of Vital COVID Relief

BATON ROUGE; Feeding Louisiana commends the passage of which will provide vital and swift relief to communities experiencing food insecurity across the state, as well as to Louisianas food banks who are working daily on the front lines to meet this immense need.

Louisiana is facing a hunger crisis at levels not seen since the Great Depression. Currently across our state, nearly 1 million individuals are experiencing food insecurity, including 1 in 3 children. As of December, more than 1 in 5 Louisianans currently receive SNAP benefits, a number that has steadily increased since the pandemic began. Thousands of Louisiana households face hard decisions between paying for rent, food, medications, and other necessities, every single day.

We believe the following provisions in the latest COVID relief package are important steps in the right direction for the communities Louisiana food banks serve and their ability to serve them:

  • Temporarily increase in SNAP benefits by 15% through June 30, 2021.

  • Waive restrictive requirements for college students to access SNAP benefits.

  • Expand P-EBT eligibility to include children under 6 who are 'enrolled' in daycare rather than school.

  • Allocate $300/week unemployment supplement through March 14th, 2021.

  • Allocate $400 million to TEFAP commodity program with up to 20 percent for distribution/storage costs.

  • Allocate $25 million for rental assistance.

This package provides much needed relief to Louisiana’s food banks by giving the communities they serve immediate, additional resources that will help them to keep food on the table. However, we know that this relief is temporary and in the communities we serve, it is clear the pandemic is not over.

Louisiana households and the Louisiana economy will continue to struggle until they receive consistent, comprehensive relief throughout this year.
